Clean your appliances naturally

Clean your appliances naturally

When the holidays approach, we tend to focus as much on cleaning as we do decorating. The main reason being that we often welcome a number of guests during the festive season and we want our homes to look their best. In addition, if you clean your home from top to bottom before the holidays, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy some time off! There is a wide variety of cleaning detergents on the market these days. Each one claiming to be the very best. However, these chemicals can cause more harm than good. Not only can they take their toll on your household items but they can also affect your health. If you are looking for a great way to clean your appliances naturally, here is an easy recipe and how to put it to good use in various areas of your home.

The first thing you will need is a clean spray bottle. Add one cup of white vinegar and one cup of rubbing alcohol to the bottle. Add another cup of water, five drops of dishwashing liquid and, if desired, you can also add five drops of lemon essential oil. This mixture is great for degreasing and it's perfect for stubborn dirt. It's also gentle enough that it won't harm your health or cause damage. The combination of these ingredients also means that it has antimicrobial properties which is an added bonus. This solution can be used to clean appliances as well as surfaces like metal, plastic, enamel, and glass. It's not recommended for use on wood or natural stone like granite or marble. If your appliances are close to any such surfaces, make sure that the surface is adequately protected before you begin cleaning.

Remove hard water residue

The mineral residue from hard water can build in all over your home wherever water is present. Vinegar is excellent when it comes to dissolving this kind of residue. Depending on the amount of residue that has accumulated, you might need to leave some areas to soak in apple cider vinegar. Apply with a sponge or cloth and allow to stand for a few minutes before rubbing the area. Other spots that are not quite as stubborn can simply be sprayed with vinegar and wiped down. The smell of the vinegar is not harmful but some say that it can get quite intense so make sure that the room is ventilated. When you are finished, wipe down the area with clean water.

Easy oven cleaning

Some ovens have a self-cleaning function and this is great to use from time to time but it doesn't necessarily clean the entire oven. Many people think that oven cleaning is backbreaking work but this need not be the case. Instead of scrubbing until your arms hurt, sprinkle a bit of baking soda all over the area you want to clean before applying some of the bottled mixtures. It will start to foam as the two substances interact and this helps loosen the grime. When it stops foaming, you can then scrub softly to clean the area. Wipe with clean water once you are done.

Deodorize your washer and dishwasher

Dirty clothes and dirty dishes can make your washer and dishwasher smell pretty bad after regular use. The best way of getting rid of these nasty smells is by combining baking soda and vinegar. Fill the detergent tray with baking soda and add white or apple cider vinegar plus half a cup of baking soda to the washer drum. Set your washer to the hottest setting and let this natural solution get to work. You can do the same for your dishwasher by spraying vinegar all over the interior of this appliance and add baking soda to the detergent tray.

By keeping your appliances clean, you will be able to keep a close eye on them and you will pick up on problems that much quicker. Proper cleaning can also help prevent problems like blockages in the drainage system of your fridge.
